Electric Karma
Any band based out of the big city has many challenges to face. The city of Toronto being one of them, with a lucrative, yet congested and competitive music scene. It can be difficult for a band to find its way through the maze of the city. Electric Karma on the other hand, is one of those bands that enjoys dealing with the challenges that the "Big City" has to offer. Armed with captivating songwriting and stimulating live shows, Electric Karma is turning some heads!
The roots of the band began to form when (Bassist) Dan Miotto, (Drummer) Steve Machulla and (Guitarist/Vocalist) Michael Kirk met in London Ontario while attending college. Being classmates in the Fanshawe Music Industry Arts program, it was obvious that they shared similar interests and the same passion for music. It was here that a strong friendship developed and the foundation of Electric Karma would be laid. Playing under the name of "Michael Kirk and the Generation" at the time, they went on to come in 2nd at a college battle of the bands and played several bars in the London area. Upon Graduation, the band went on a short hiatus as they moved back home to Toronto. However, it was time to take things to the next level. The idea of recording an EP would soon be in the works, (sadly without the help of Steve Machulla, who at the time had to leave the band), as well as a name that spoke more about the music.
After a myriad of replacement drummers and auditions, Electric Karma chose Chris Nikolidas to step in to fill the void. Over 2010, the gents let loose a string of shows in support of the "Letter Home" release, getting to know all the great venues in the GTA such as The Horseshoe tavern, El Mocambo, Lee's Palace, The Drake Hotel, and Velvet Underground, just to name a few. As the guys grew in Toronto's music scene, so did their songs and sound. A sound that was fresh to the scene. Their blend of indie/alternative rock with the catchiness of pop seemed to be well received by audiences and promoters across the city. Such tracks as "Cadillac" and "Side of the Law" give way to the occasional roar of dirty garage tones; while songs like "(Don't) Come Back Lady", "Cecilia" and "California" are those feel good tracks that keep you on your toes for the rest of the night. Anyway you wanna put it... it rocks!
In the fall of 2010 EK would release a single and video for the track "Toy Soldier", a song which spoke loudly, took a sturdy political stand, and quickly became a crowed favorite. Unfortunately shortly after its release, Chris Nikolidas (Drummer), had to leave the band. Once again the trio was cut down to a duo, but not for long, as Steve Machulla would take the reins as Drummer once more.
Keep an open eye and ear for Electric Karma in 2011, as only bigger, better, and brighter things are SURE to come!!!
